Here is the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Alberta Charity Sector 2021.
We recently reviewed the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return database for 2021 as part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project. The database covers about 30,354 of the approximately 86,000 registered charities in Canada that had filed their T3010 and were processed into CRA’s Charity Listing database by February 2023.
Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Alberta Charity Sector 2021 include:
- 9,074 Alberta registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada
- $40.7 billion in total revenue for Alberta charities and total expenditures of $38.9 billion
- Government revenue totaled $30.8 billion including from the federal government ($1.2 billion), provincial governments ($28.8 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($831 million). In total, government is approximately 75.9% of revenue of the whole charity sector in Alberta.
- 8,390 identified themselves as active and 436 as inactive
- 3,303 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2021 fiscal year
- Alberta charities spent over $122.5 million outside of Canada
- 7 Alberta charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
- 578 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 115 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 242 had volunteers conducting foreign activities
- $108.5 million was received by Alberta charities from outside of Canada
- 4,601 identified having employment expenses while 4,423 did not have any employment expenses
- $22.1 billion was spent by Alberta charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
- $2 billion in official donation receipts were issued by Alberta registered charities
