Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs’ Snapshot of the Alberta Charity Sector 2023 include:

  • 9,100 registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada.
  • $44.3 billion in total revenue for Alberta charities.
  • Total expenditures of $42.7 billion.
  • $32.3 billion, including from the federal government ($1.0 billion), provincial government ($30.4 billion), and municipal/regional government ($831.7 million), making up approximately 72.9% of the revenue of the whole charity sector in Alberta.
  • 8,604 charities identified as active, and 3,344 as inactive.
  • 3,344 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2022 fiscal year.
  • Alberta charities spent $160.9 million outside of Canada.
  • 8 Alberta charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada.
  • 321 charities identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 142 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada, and 283 had volunteers conducting foreign activities.
  • $144.8 million was received by Alberta charities from outside of Canada.
  • 4,614 charities identified having employment expenses, while 4,444 did not have any employment expenses.
  • $23.6 billion was spent by Alberta charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures.
  • $2.5 billion in official donation receipts were issued by Alberta registered charities.
