Here is the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Atlantic Provinces Charity Sector 2021 (Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island).
We recently reviewed the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return database for 2021 as part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project. The database covers about 30,354 of the approximately 86,000 registered charities in Canada that had filed their T3010 and were processed into CRA’s Charity Listing database by February 2023.
Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Atlantic Provinces Charity Sector 2021 include:
- 7,764 Atlantic Provinces registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada
- $16.1 billion in total revenue for Atlantic Provinces charities and total expenditures of $14.7 billion
- Government revenue totaled $11.8 billion including from the federal government ($675 million), provincial governments ($10.8 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($337 million). In total, government is approximately 73% of revenue of the whole charity sector in the Atlantic Provinces
- 7,243 identified themselves as active and 311 as inactive
- 2,767 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2021 fiscal year
- Atlantic Provinces charities spent over $54.2 million outside of Canada
- 5 Atlantic Provinces charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
- 193 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 33 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 52 had volunteers conducting foreign activities
- $1.8 million was received by Atlantic Provinces charities from outside of Canada
- 4,165 identified having employment expenses while 3,552 did not have any employment expenses
- $9.7 billion was spent by Atlantic Provinces charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
- $872 million in official donation receipts were issued by Atlantic Provinces registered charities
