Here is the Blumbergs Snapshot of the British Columbia Charity Sector 2021.
We recently reviewed the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return database for 2021 as part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project. The database covers about 30,354 of the approximately 86,000 registered charities in Canada that had filed their T3010 and were processed into CRA’s Charity Listing database by February 2023.
Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs Snapshot of the British Columbia Charity Sector 2021 include:
- 12,040 British Columbia registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada
- $49 billion in total revenue for British Columbia charities and total expenditures of $45.2 billion
- Government revenue totaled $33.3 billion including from the federal government ($1.5 billion), provincial governments ($31.2 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($561 million). In total, government is approximately 68% of revenue of the whole charity sector in British Columbia
- 11,159 identified themselves as active and 497 as inactive
- 4,469 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2021 fiscal year
- British Columbia charities spent over $208.3 million outside of Canada
- 13 British Columbia charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
- 880 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 206 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 371 had volunteers conducting foreign activities
- $181 million was received by British Columbia charities from outside of Canada
- 6,084 identified having employment expenses while 5,907 did not have any employment expenses
- $24.8 billion was spent by British Columbia charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
- $3.4 billion in official donation receipts were issued by British Columbia registered charities
