Here is the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Ontario Charity Sector 2021.
We recently reviewed the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return database for 2021 as part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project. The database covers about 30,354 of the approximately 86,000 registered charities in Canada that had filed their T3010 and were processed into CRA’s Charity Listing database by February 2023.
Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs Snapshot of the Ontario Charity Sector 2021 include:
- 30,540 Ontario registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada
- $132.4 billion in total revenue for Ontario charities and total expenditures of $118.2 billion.
- Government revenue totaled $80 billion including from the federal government ($6.7 billion), provincial governments ($66 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($7.2 billion). In total, government is approximately 60.4% of revenue of the whole charity sector in Ontario.
- 28,085 identified themselves as active and 1,640 as inactive
- 12,238 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2021 fiscal year
- Ontario charities spent over $2.7 billion outside of Canada
- 74 Ontario charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
- 1,359 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 425 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 854 had volunteers conducting foreign activities.
- $2.4 billion was received by Ontario charities from outside of Canada
- 15,111 identified having employment expenses, while 15,096 did not have any employment expenses
- $67.2 billion was spent by Ontario charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
- $10.9 billion in official donation receipts were issued by Ontario registered charities
