Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs’ Snapshot of the Ontario Charity Sector 2023 include:

  • 30,426 Registered Charities in the Database Ontario registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 86,000 charities in Canada
  • $162 billion in total revenue for Ontario charities and total expenditures of $136 billion.
  • Government revenue totaled $85 billion including from the federal government ($6.6 billion), provincial governments ($69.2 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($9.3 billion). In total government is approximately 54.8% of revenue of the whole charity sector in Ontario.
  • 28,644 identified themselves as active and 12,408 as inactive
  • 12,408 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2022 fiscal year
  • Ontario charities spent over $3.7 billion outside of Canada
  • 76 Ontario charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
  • 1,372 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 493 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 919 had volunteers conducting foreign activities.
  • $3.2 billion was received by Ontario charities from outside of Canada
  • 15,156 identified having employment expenses while 15,090 did not have any employment expenses
  • $76,331,558,372.0 billion was spent by Ontario charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
  • $12.5 billion in official donation receipts were issued by Ontario registered charities
