Canadian Soccer Association not filing financial statements with Corporations Canada as required by the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (“CNCA”)

I just took a look at the Corporations Canada corporate profile for the Canadian Soccer Association. (PDF for Canadian Soccer Association corporate profile report) The Canadian Soccer Association is not filing financial statements with Corporations Canada as required by the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (“CNCA”).

A little bit of background…The Canadian Soccer Association receives funds from governments, corporate partnerships, members, etc. If it receives over $10,000 in public funds during a year, it is a “soliciting corporation”. They have identified themselves as a soliciting corporation. Soliciting corporations must file their financial statements with Corporations Canada every single year. It appears that Soccer Canada has failed to file their financial statements for about seven years in a row.

Funders should not fund an organization that has not or will not file legally required financial statements.

We have called on different levels of Canadian governments (Federal, Provincial, and Municipal) to require that all grantees receiving funds must place at least five years’ financial statements on their website if the entity has been around for five years or longer. In addition, obviously, organizations that must legally file documents with a government department should also do that.
