Charities Directorate of CRA updates the registered charity penalty and suspension page

The Charities Directorate of CRA has recently updated the registered charity penalty and suspension page.  It is laid out more clearly.  For example, they specify whether a particular intermediate sanction applies to:

  1. Charitable organizations
  2. Public foundations
  3. Private foundations
  4. RCAAAs
  5. RJOs – Registered Journalism Organizations
  6. Other QDs

They also provide more detailed explanations of when the intermediate sanction would apply.

Charities should pay attention to penalties and suspension.   Everyone knows that the CRA can revoke the registered charity status of a charity, but fewer people know that the CRA can impose intermediate sanctions (suspensions and penalties) and that the CRA is increasingly using these intermediate sanctions.  Intermediate sanctions are public, as is revocation.
